Holy Spirit HELPer
Our five year old grandson, who has a very vivid imagination, loves to play near the chicken coop on our farm. One reason may be that my husband stores his tractor near there. This young one drives thousands of miles every year without even leaving the back yard.
His great grandmother happens to see him playing as she goes to close the coop door for the evening. He approaches her with alarm in his voice. “Gran, I can hear someone calling for help. A child might be hurt and we must call 911.” Gran listens carefully but can’t hear anything like the young boy is describing. However, he is so insistent that Gran strains just one more time to try and hear anything that might resemble a call for help. To her amazement she does hear someone yelling what sounds like “help”.
Several members of our family agree that we should at least travel to the nearest neighbor and check on them since the calls are coming from that general direction.
We load up into the SUV and slowly travel up the road in search of someone in need. We arrive near the neighbors house and I turn off the automotive engine to listen for anyone in distress. Gran quickly exits the vehicle and slowly walks a little further. She is only a few steps from us when a stout looking middle age man enters the dirt road from a mass of tall weeds and towering sage grass.
All of us are surprised and not quite sure what his intentions are. Is he the victim or worse?
Gran approaches cautiously and asked if the man needs some assistance. He says he has lost his rabbit dog and is calling “hep” expecting the dog to return to his crate for a safe trip home.
Well the mystery is solved, hep or help sounds pretty close from a distance. This time, no one was in need. But how many times is someone in need of help and we don’t even investigate.
The Holy Spirit, which lives in every born again believer, many times prompts us when someone is not only in physical distress but spiritual distress as well. How much of the time do we ignore Him.
“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever the- Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you”. John 14:16-17.
